Android 8+
Open Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps (labels vary). Choose the browser or file manager that downloaded the package and enable Allow from this source.
Only enable one installer at a time. Pair this with the safety habits in How to Install APKs Safely.
Older Android
Legacy builds may use a global Unknown sources checkbox under Security. That system-wide toggle is riskier—upgrade when possible or limit usage carefully.
Revoke afterward
After installation succeeds, return to the same menu and disable the permission. Leaving it on expands the attack surface for accidental installs.
OEM variations
Samsung, Xiaomi, and other skins rename menus frequently. Search Settings for “unknown” or “install unknown” if the path differs. Screenshot your own device when publishing production docs.
